‘You are never too small to make a big difference.’ - Beth Davis
Have you ever heard about the young environmentalist, Greta Thunberg? Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg is a Swedish climate and political activist initially known for challenging world leaders to take immediate action to reduce the effects of climate change. Her speeches and powerful activism are famous around the world. Her speeches are characterized by a sense of urgency and a direct tone. On 25 January Thunberg gave a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. She warned the global leaders that "I don't want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act. I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house was on fire—because it is ". She has also stated that politicians and decision-makers need to listen to the scientists more often than make up their own topics and statements.
On 23 September 2019, Thunberg addressed the assembled world leaders at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit held in New York City. Accusing world leaders of stealing her dreams and her childhood by their inaction on climate change, she opened her speech to the General Assembly with an impassioned introduction, which was widely covered by the media-
"This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope? How dare you! You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction. And all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!" "You are failing us... But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say: We will never forgive you."
Hearing this, makes me feel proud of Greta Thunberg, for standing up against the several politicians and abundant decsision makers. Her followers did the right thing by supporting and standing by her in her hard times. I support her truly and fully because she has said the right things.
